What is the Hakuho Japanese Language Research Fellowship Program?
The Hakuho Japanese Language Research Fellowship Program aims to support the further deepening and practicalization of international research into the Japanese language and Japanese language instruction by inviting leading international researchers in these fields to Japan for residential research. The deepening of international understanding of Japan also helps create an environment in which tomorrow’s Japanese children will be able to shine.
Eligibility
Researchers to which all of the following apply. Engaged in research into the Japanese language or Japanese language instruction. University professors or associate professors with outstanding research results, or other persons with equivalent research backgrounds. Non-Japanese nationality (Japanese researchers who have resided outside Japan for 10 years or more and are active in the academic community of their country of residence will also be considered).
Fellowship content
Airfares, living and research expenses, housing subsidy and other expenses necessary for conducting research in Japan. Long-term (12-month) and short-term (6-month) and fellowships are available. Around 7-8 fellows will be invited each year.
Research while in Japan
Invitees will conduct their research with the cooperation of the following receiving organizations: National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics Ochanomizu University Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Waseda University

- Obtain Application Guide, Research Fellow Application Form and Letter of Recommendation. (Downloadable below)
- Fill in the Research Fellow Application Form
- Have the person recommending you for this Program fill in the Letter of Recommendation
- Prepare Japanese translation of the Letter of Recommendation (if written in a language other than Japanese)
- Send the above documents to the designated address by mail
